In Cambodia, there are a lot of public holidays throughout the year but without a doubt, the most exciting out of all is Khmer New Year.
On Khmer New Year, people around the country go back to their hometowns and celebrate this special occasion with friends and family. Celebrations usually mean having a fun, crowded party with loud music along the road, where people spray water everywhere and throw powder at each other. Some people use this time of the year to go and visit other provinces with their loved ones.
Khmer New Year usually takes place during the second week of April, but the past two years people did not get the chance to enjoy this great event due to the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Royal Government of Cambodia decided to postpone the Khmer New Year celebrations to help keep everyone safe and prevent the spread of the virus. People understood the importance of these measures and stayed at home.
After significant efforts, most people in Cambodia have not only been vaccinated but also received their third dose, reducing the risk of getting sick, so the government has decided to allow Khmer New Year celebrations to take place in 2022.
This means that people finally have the chance to celebrate Khmer New Year again, in ways they would traditionally have done. It’s going to be a busy and spectacular event!
Although it is exciting to take part in these celebrations, we encourage and remind everyone to keep safe and follow the instructions of the Ministry of Health.
Happy Khmer New Year everyone!
